The Orono Years

These are the drawings that I did while I was at Orono High School between 1984 - 1988. For the past 20 some years, they have been kept in storage. However, shortly before my father's death, he requested that include them on my photography website. So here they are...

Night Rider, circa 1984

NightRiderb

 • Night Rider, circa 1984
 • No Escape, circa 1985
This image is based on a movie that was out at the time. However, I have to admit that I never saw the movie.
 • Self Potrait, circa 1987
Done for a school project (Why do I look so angry?)
 • Study of Chist, circa 1987
"Study by Ruben, perfected by Reininger" - My goodness, weren't we full of ourselves!
 • The last Ride (circa 1987)
 • With Honor (Circa 1986)
One of two attempts to use an airbrush. I remember being impatient with the whole process.
 • The New Jersey Devil (Circa 1983)
This is a reproduction of a drawing from an article about the New Jersey Devil.
 • A fairy in the Night (circa 1984)
The fairy is a reproduction of an illustration I saw in a Time Life series book about the occult. I believe the original artist is Waterhouse.
 • A Mighty Sword, circa 1984
Another example of me in my D & D phase!
This is one of two drawings with the hooded individual and the pigeon. Why the pigeon? Everything else in the image is dark and mysterious. But the pigeon is front and center and seemingly to be mocking the dark mood.
 • The Sorceress, circa 1984
Yet, another example of my D & D phase;-)
At this time I was reading about the occult - You know the Time Life series about the occult. They would run commericials late at night about these books from Time Life with a lot of Halloween imagery. Anyway, Orono, eventually got a copy of this set and I checked them. They were essentially folklore stories. I believe many of the illustrations were from Waterhouse, including this one. However, when my wife saw this, she thought the woman in this drawing (Yes, it is a woman) was actually a man.
 • Book of Magic (circa 1984)
The second image with the hooded gentleman and the pigeon. Twenty some years later, I like the pigeon. The guy is very serious, reading his book of magic spells but the pigeon is there saying "whatever; you don't concern me."
 • A Queen Caught in the Act (circa 1984)
A reproduction of a cigarette ad.
 • Entertainmnet of the Princess (circa 1984)
This is a reproduction of illustration from the Time Life series about the occult. Again, I believe the girl and the fairy are from an Waterhouse painting. Twenty some years later, what I want know is how do you get to that freaking castle?! That has to be a hike!!!

It should also be noted that at this time, I would draw on both sides of the sheet of the paper. If you look closely behind the woman, you will notice the old Flag for the USSR which was on the other side of this sheet.
 • Freedom (circa 1983)
Uncle Sam looks pissed! Look at those broad shoulders!! You will also notice that there are 13 birds behind him. I believe that they are suppose to be eagles - representing the thirteen original colonies - that or the fact I was thirteen at the time.

I would also like to say that the mountain is very good mountain. I like that mountain!
 • Hobgoblin says "Lord, what fools these mortals be" (circa 1984)
 • Icky's Palace (circa 1983)
